That being said, Canada does not feel the need to join in the heritage celebration. Why? I don't know. Perhaps because people of Mexican decent are few and far between up here. Perhaps because Dos Equis doesn't export to Canada. Beats me. After asking around at work today it became quite clear that not only is this national drinking holiday not observed, they've never even heard of it. Seriously? I was dumbfounded. I even had to explain to The Canadian exactly what Cinco de Mayo entails -- basically a Mexican St. Patrick's Day. Don't you think that is comparable? Not exactly a bank holiday, but equally important as a bar holiday.
Why would you ignore such a great event? Who doesn't want to listen to the mariachi band tonight?
And it was empty, save a few lonely patrons.
And our waitress was French.
And the music was bad 80's ballads.
And I totally inhaled a delicious strawberry margarita while The Canadian had a locally brewed beer. You win some, you lose some.
So, I'm calling it now -- next year I'm hosting a Cinco de Mayo party and showing these Canadians what they've been missing. I'm talking fajitas, Corona, guacamole, sombreros and bad tequila shots.
It's going to be life changing.

I'm very proud of you for sticking to your guns and celebrating Cinco! You show those Canadians how it's done!
