Cinco de Mayo.

So, I was wrong. I admit it. All these years I have believed that the whole point of downing Patron cheap tequila on May 5th was to celebrate Mexico's independence. I didn't exactly know who Mexico gained their independence from, but that is beside the point. As it turns out, according to my friends at Wikipedia, Cinco de Mayo is not the day of independence. Mexico's Independence Day is in September. However, Cinco de Mayo is still cause for celebration as Mexico apparently needs a day to celebrate their heritage. It works out for Mexico and the USA because we Americans are open minded people and want to celebrate Mexican heritage as well. Plus, it gives us an excellent reason to drink tequila, eat enchiladas and wear sombreros. And get a little intoxicated, if you're so inclined.

That being said, Canada does not feel the need to join in the heritage celebration. Why? I don't know. Perhaps because people of Mexican decent are few and far between up here. Perhaps because Dos Equis doesn't export to Canada. Beats me. After asking around at work today it became quite clear that not only is this national drinking holiday not observed, they've never even heard of it. Seriously? I was dumbfounded. I even had to explain to The Canadian exactly what Cinco de Mayo entails -- basically a Mexican St. Patrick's Day. Don't you think that is comparable? Not exactly a bank holiday, but equally important as a bar holiday.

Why would you ignore such a great event? Who doesn't want to listen to the mariachi band tonight?

Undeterred, and ever hell bent on observing my American holidays at appropriate times, I dragged The Canadian out to the one and only Mexican restaurant in town tonight.

And it was empty, save a few lonely patrons.

And our waitress was French.

And the music was bad 80's ballads.

But darn it, we feasted on sub-par beef nachos and surprisingly tasty chicken quesadillas.

And I totally inhaled a delicious strawberry margarita while The Canadian had a locally brewed beer. You win some, you lose some.

So, I'm calling it now -- next year I'm hosting a Cinco de Mayo party and showing these Canadians what they've been missing. I'm talking fajitas, Corona, guacamole, sombreros and bad tequila shots.

It's going to be life changing.
