My New Motto. Productivity Produces Motivation.

So, you know those days when you wake up and you can think of nothing other than the one million things you have to do that day so you shoot out of bed determined to get your butt in gear but then you get side tracked making coffee and then realizing you're almost out of creamer which then forces you to sit and write down your entire grocery list for the week and by the time that is done your coffee is ready and then you slowly meander over to the computer because you need to write an essay before your husband wakes up but you don't want to write an essay because you're 30 years old and have already done your time in school and still, quite frankly, cannot believe you're back in school as it is but you are so you may as well get used to it because this is what it is going to take to get your career back on track but then your mind drifts back to the laundry that needs to be done and the dishes that need to be put away and how you really need to make it to the gym today because you ate a gigantic cinnamon bun for breakfast and lunch yesterday and it is a good thing that the gym is right next to the grocery store so you can take care of the list you just made and if you can get all of this done in a reasonable amount of time then you'll have enough time to grab a quick shower and still be on time for Sunday dinner and hopefully you'll be home at a bit early which will give you enough time to iron all of your clothes for the week and pack lunches for tomorrow and maybe if you're lucky you'll be able to get in a quick convo with your BFF and fire off some emails containing a "Life in Canada" powerpoint that you made yesterday for your geography teacher friends and have a glass of wine and then as soon as that is all done you'll be able to sit down and crank out a blog and still make it to bed at a reasonable hour because you have to work in the morning? But you just don't feel like it?

Yeah. Today was that day. Par for the course.

Here's my point: I am no longer seeking motivation. It eludes me. Instead, I have adapted a new motto:

Motivation does not produce productivity. Productivity produces motivation.

I like it because it is true. The more I do, the more I want to get done.

So on the days that motivation is running thin and the to-do list is long, I'll just take a look at my disaster of a desk and see my new motto staring back at me.

Yes, that is a cup of Starbucks that is at least a week old.

And yes, that is an empty bottle of wine.

And yes, the white Apple cords are taking over my life.

And yes, that beautiful blue chair is going to break any day now but I don't have the heart to replace it because I love it so much.

And yes, that is a gigantic push pin. Everyone should have gigantic push pins in their life. Go buy a box.
